PBS John McGiven's Main Streets Visits Fired Up! Studios

We were thrilled to welcome PBS Main Streets with John McGiven to Water Street Glassworks yesterday as they filmed our amazing Fired Up! students in action! The studio was alive with creativity, focus, and incredible talent.

The PBS crew captured not only the intricate process of glassmaking but also the spirit of our youth arts program—teamwork, growth, and the joy of discovering new skills. Our students did a fabulous job representing both themselves and the Water Street Glassworks community. 🔥

It was a proud moment for our instructors and staff to watch these young artists shine in front of the camera, confidently sharing what they’ve learned in the Fired Up!

One especially memorable moment came when Kamden guided Emmy, a PBS host, through a hands-on experience in the hotshop. Together, they created a beautiful glass paperweight. Kamden did a fantastic job guiding her through the process—it was clear he’s been learning by example and absorbing the skills shared by his instructor Eli.  It was a full-circle moment that made us all proud.

Learn More About Fired Up! and How You Can Make a Difference

Since 2004, Fired Up! has offered Benton Harbor teens a transformative opportunity to explore the world of glass art. Through this tuition-free, after-school program, students gain hands-on experience in glassblowing, beadmaking/jewelry, and fused glass, —all while developing valuable life and career skills in a supportive, creative environment.

What makes Fired Up! unique is our commitment to mentorship, professional development, and entrepreneurial experience. Students work closely with experienced teaching artists, write artist statements, participate in exhibitions, and even sell their work at juried events like the nationally recognized Krasl Art Fair.

We’re proud of the confidence, creativity, and leadership that grows in our studios. Many alumni return as staff, mentors, and ambassadors—proof that the impact of Fired Up! extends far beyond the studio.

But we can’t do it without you.

Your support helps us cover the cost of instruction, materials, transportation, field trips, and snacks for each student. It takes $2,500 per year to sponsor one teen, and every donation—large or small—makes a lasting difference.
